CarMD Vehicle Health System review

The CarMD vehicle health system is alright, but you can get a better and more useful OBD II reader for about $40 less...

I got this CarMD vehicle health system kit off of Amazon.com for a few bucks under a hundred dollars. I saw an advertisement for it in my Men’s Fitness magazine and thought it would be good to help diagnose problems with our cars. This way I could keep the repair shops honest and not be hit upside the head with a real big, unexpected repair bill.

Well, other then the fact that it took 4 weeks to get here – I think the Amazon seller was looking to defraud me and only shipped after I pestered the staff at Amazon.com like a hundred times – it works okay. You hook it up to your car’s OBD II connector, which in my Ford Taurus is under the dash (its in this same area on most cars nowadays), and then it will give you codes if anything is wrong.

The actual device won’t tell you what these codes mean. You still have to look them up on your computer by using the software that comes on the cd. It works okay, but for the money it is better to get an actual OBD II reader that can read and interpret engine fault codes and erase them too.

Restore cloudy, yellow, dirty headlight lenses to new and save big money over replacements with the best in headlight restoration and cleaning kits at MDWholesale.com!

The erase function is great for when you get an oil change at some place other then a new car dealership. This way you can erase the change your oil light which will otherwise stay on for a very annoying period of time. The CarMD vehicle health system does not have the erase function.

For less money (around $50 to $60) on Amazon.com and Ebay one can easily get a OBD II code reader that does everything including the erase function. I saw one on Craigslist here in Charlotte NC for $30, but I don’t know if I would trust a used one from Craigslist. A good price, though. I also noticed some guy with an entrepreneurial spirit was charging $25 on Craigslist to come out to your house and erase any codes.

He probably gets a lot of business from people with no morals selling cars (like the used car dealers on North Tryon and on South Boulevard). This is why it is important to get a complete used car check over before you buy a used car. The seller could have had the codes erased and the problems were not fixed. A good checkover will find the issues and problems regardless.

As to the CarMD vehicle health system, I think it is okay, but for about $40 less you can get an all in one unit with more features. I would rather have an all in one unit with the erase feature. The CarMD unit is just too expensive and doesn’t have any additional features or benefits.
