Ford Mustang CD player not working? It’s usually an easy fix!

CD player not working in your Ford Mustang? Read this article and learn how to fix this issue easily yourself!
Let me tell you something – I am a mechanic and have worked in a Ford Lincoln Mercury store for years. One complaint customers have been coming in to our service department with a lot lately is CD players in their late model 1996 to current Ford Mustangs don’t work or stop working. This is happening in all models from the V6 on up to the GT and even the cobra.
Once in a while it’s because someone has jammed or forced a CD into the player. That is never a good idea. If your CD player isn’t loading right take it in to have a mechanic take a look at it. Don’t force a CD into a CD player or you risk breaking the unit itself. But that isn’t the usual problem. What it usually is is just a blown fuse.

Ford, being the cheapskates that they are has allocated a cheap fuse that fits underneath the steering wheel for the CD player unit. Nine times out of 10 this is what I find is wrong and it just requires the fuse to be replaced. This is a cheap $.10 fuse that anyone can easily replace and fix. But if you bring it into my service line we have to charge an hour’s worth of labor and of course the car dealership will charge much more than $.10 for the fuse.
Half of the time the fuse is still good it just needs its contacts cleaned. This can happen if you live in a moist environment. The moisture in the air can cause carbon build up on the fuse contacts. This can make them not work and obviously this will render your CD as nonfunctional until the fuse is either cleaned or replaced.

Before replacing the fuse is always a good idea just to take it out and clean it with a shop rag. A shop rag is rougher than the usual towel and is more similar to denim. So by rubbing each side of the fuse on the rag clean off any carbon build up. Then replace the fuse and see if this makes the CD player work when you turn your car on. If this doesn’t work then obviously replace the fuse.
Now the other one time out of 10 when I see is broken internal parts of the CD player. In this case you need to replace the CD player. It’s not worth having it fixed. Do not buy a replacement CD player for your Mustang from a Ford car dealership. Instead purchase a replacement for far less either online or from a salvage yard – salvage yards can be a great resource for buying expensive replacement parts like CD player units and similar for your Mustang.
Be safer when driving at night and greatly increase the effectiveness of you car or trucks headlights!
Whereas the car dealer’s parts department will charge between $400 and $600 for a replacement CD player and then another hours worth of labor to install it, you can easily a high quality replacement CD player for around $100 and then get someone off of craigslist to install it for $50. That’ll save you three under more dollars!
So, to review, if your CD player does not work in your Mustang. First check the fuse under the dash or steering wheel (the exact location of his views will be shown in your owner’s manual). If cleaning or replacing the fuse doesn’t work then you need to replace the CD unit and do it through the way I outlined above to save yourself several hundred dollars.
