How to get rid of smelly odors in your car or truck

Got horrible, offending odors in your car or truck? You need to read this!

I have been in the automotive business for quite some time and over the years I’ve seen quite a few cars that have had some pretty nasty, smelly and stinky odors. mostly these are either trade-ins from customers that just neglected their cars or cars we bought at auction or from a wholesaler.

You’d probably say what am I doing wasting my time with cars that smell so bad? Well, actually because of their smell or bad odor I can usually get these cars much cheaper. Consumers, as a whole, don’t know that bad odors even the smell of smoke or rotten fish can be removed from a car’s interior. So they would rather take a hit of somewhere around $2000 or more in the value of their vehicle.

Then I turn around and for less than $10-$50 remove that odor and pocket an easy extra $2,000 in my pocket. So what is my secret you ask in being able to remove horrible odors from any car or truck? Well we have a couple of different methods that we used and it depends on if I’m in the field (or out of town at a car auction) or back at my car dealership and reconditioning area.

At my shop we have a device called an ozone generator. You can buy these for around $300-$500. They last many years and can be used on thousands of different vehicles. Basically what you do is you open up the car, stick the device in the car, plug it in and let it run overnight with the windows up. It is just that simple and it pretty much removes almost any odor.

I got five of these ozone generators in perfect working condition from a storage locker that I bought that used to belong to some back yard mechanic for around $200 a few years back. That was a great deal. These ozone generators are probably out of the affordability range of most consumers. You would only ever use it once or twice and it wouldn’t be worth the $300 to $500 he would pay for it.

For consumers and equally effective and easy use method is to get a plastic or ceramic bowl and fill it with a few pounds of fresh charcoal for the grill. Place this in the car near where the smell is worst, but not directly on top of it as the bowl can also seal in the smell. When left overnight in the car (or over a few nights with really bad smells) the charcoal will help to neutralize any offending odors.

It also helps to use newspaper. Crumble up a few sections of the newspaper and place them around the floor and seats. The newspaper will help to soak up smelly and disgusting odors. don’t laugh newspaper is very good at removing odors and has been used along with charcoal to remove bad odors from mildew, mold and other nasty smells in refrigerators for years.

And then one final thing to do while you’re doing this is to get a cup or bowl and fill it half to three quarters full with vinegar. Vinegar is extremely effective in killing off the source of these bad odors which is usually bacteria, mildew or mold. With all three of these ideas being used (charcoal, crumbled up newspaper and vinegar) you will actually remove more of the offending smell then you would with an expensive ozone generator.

For the worst smells you may need to repeat this treatment a few times. It’s the same with the ozone generator devices. On the worst smells I sometimes have to leave the ozone generator in for several days. So if you have a bad, lingering smell or odor in your car or truck you now know that you have two options that work equally as well to remove the offending odor.

If you have dirty, cloudy headlights then you need the headlight restoration kit from MDWholesale.com!
