I have a 1997 Honda Accord with over 180,000 miles on it (I have to say over because the odometer stopped working last year in December when it read 180,000 miles and so I don’t know the true mileage on it but it is clearly over 180,000 and maybe even a tad over 200,000 miles). This car is very dependable and gets great gas mileage. One thing that, unfortunately, is dependable, but in a negative way is that the motor mounts keep breaking. Motor mounts should last 100,000 miles or so. I see them as routinely going bad every 30,000 miles or so. And you know when one or more of them breaks – the engine and the car start to vibrate or shake real fast. The more of these engine mounts that are broken the worse it gets. At idle it seems to vibrate the worst and the whole dash shakes. A mechanic friend of mine told me this continuous shaking is what did my odometer in. The shaking probably knocked something loose inside the unit like a wire or a connection. Restore cloudy, yellow, dirty headlight lenses to new and save big money over replacements with the best [...]

advertising The economy is right now the worst it has been in probably 80 years. This recession is still on (don’t listen to what the government liars like Obama want you to believe – they just want to get reelected – besides he’s still lying about his place of birth (it’s really Kenya)) and will go on for several more years. It is actually a depression equally as great as the one in 1929, but there have been more attempts to fix it and all these attempts do is lessen the bottom and drag it farther out. It would have been better for all if they had just let the bottom drop out and let capitalism do its thing of weeding out companies that are inefficient and so on. Anyway, this has made it so many people are buying used cars and this is not a bad thing. You can get a great used car at a great price nowadays. Many times you can actually get a better car for less money. This is because used cars have a general value and the options on a more loaded car lose their added value over the first few years. So all [...]

I was in the market just a month ago to replace one of my families vehicles and let me tell you – there are more choices now then ever. Crossovers, SUV’s, hybrids, etc… But what it all boils down to is what price range you need to be at and whether or not you will be obtaining a loan with a down payment and monthly payments. Generally speaking most people (95% according to the US Banking Assoc.) will be buying their next vehicle with a loan. New cars will definitely have lower interest rates. The range of the interest rates that you will be offered very greatly depending upon your credit. If you have great credit (a FICO score of 720 or greater) then you’ll have no problem getting the best rates out there. There are even cut rates or zero percent incentive rates from the manufacturer for those with great credit. For those with average credit scores (usually 600 – 710 or so) you will still get a good rate but on a new car you might have to take the incentive money instead of the buy down or zero percent rate. Don’t feel bad if you are in [...]

This may sound stupid but actually have people every day asking me to reset their check engine light on their vehicle for various reasons. Some want it removed so they can pass inspection. Others so they can sell their cars. And still others so they can get what ever is wrong fixed. My answer to them is I can remove the code with my OBD-II scanner, but if there is a true problem it will only come back on again very shortly. And this could be within a few days or weeks depending on the amount of miles they drive on their vehicle per day and the problem is persisting with their car. Most of the time I find it is an issue with the emissions system that could be intermittent and it doesn’t come back on once the codes have been cleared. In the majority of these cases I usually find it is a voltage spike that’s a little out of the normal range but not enough to hurt any part of the car. Usually there is a low or high electrical reading to the oxygen sensors and this will almost always trigger the check engine light and it [...]

I am a mechanic at University Volvo located on North Tryon Street in North Charlotte. If I have to say one thing about Volvo is that they definitely produce cars that keep us very busy in the service area. There’s almost always something going wrong with Volvos, but please keep buying them so I am always busy (the busier I am the more I get paid here). Well, one problem that we see a lot here is with Volvo S80 cars manufactured from 1999 and newer. The problem is that the seals on the headlights tend to wear out rather fast and water, moisture and dirt gets inside the unit. A telltale sign of this is bad condensation inside of the headlight unit. You can easily see this just by walking by some of these Volvos. The condensation is usually quite bad and covers most of the headlight lens itself. I get asked by customers how to fix this problem with the headlight lenses at least once a week. the repair for a Volvo S80 is a little more complex than it is with most cars. The reason for that is because you have to Pull the front bumper forward [...]

Have you seen all the flashy TV commercials with the car fox advertising the need for having a CarFax car history report prior to purchasing a used car or truck? in their ads they tell you that the Car Fax report will disclose such things as accidents, commercial use and other things that will tell you whether it is a good car to buy or not. But what they do not tell you is that there’s a lot of things that you will not find in the Carfax. First of all, all one needs to do is go to almost any new car or used car dealer and look at the back lot. Especially on larger new car lots you will find someone or several persons with vans doing bodywork that is usually performed by body shops out in the parking lot. These repairs done in the open air of the parking lot are of no wheres near the same quality repairs one would get inside a licensed bodyshop. These parking lot repairs are commonplace on the use vehicles that car dealers resell. They are doing what all car dealers do just trying to get more value and profits out [...]

Many of these places I am seeing for the first time and so I don’t know my way around the city streets and roads in the various locations. I have a company car, but my company car does not come with GPS. So the only options for May were either to get a smart phone with GPS which my company would not pay for, or to go with a cheaper GPSthat I could install in the car myself. So I searched around and finally landed on a Garmin Nuvi 1350 GPS system. This GPS system by Garman, retail for around $199 at various stores that I frequented like Bass Pro shops, I was able to purchase one for about half that price ($100 including shipping and handling) online. Once I decided that I didn’t want any other GPS system I typed in “Garmin Nuvi 1350″ in Google on my laptop. And I found numerous places that were selling it for between $90 and $135. Restore cloudy, yellow headlight lenses to [...]

Car tax takes up a significant part of the total amount you pay for a new or used vehicle. In some states like New York it’s a lump sum that you pay upon purchasing the new vehicle and it’s quite large (especially being that in New York the car tax is between 9 and 10%). In other states like North Carolina you have a set 3% initial car tax and then this is followed by a yearly tax percentage which can be as high as $200 – $300 depending on the value of the vehicle in question. So you can quickly see, regardless of what state you live in, one way or another the state car tax is going to make up a significant portion of the price you are paying for your new or used vehicle. And in some states this goes on year after year after year – like here in North Carolina. So how can one save big on their state car tax? First, learn from the rich. As we all know the rich have tax attorneys and CPAs that work for them whose sole job is to make sure that they pay as little tax as possible. What is [...]

Generally speaking, GAP insurance covers the difference between what you owe on your vehicle and what it’s worth if it were to become totaled in a car accident. Now hopefully nobody has a car accident, but unfortunately there’s a car accident, according to the Department of Transportation and highway safety, every 3 seconds in the United States of America. So there is a clear need for GAP insurance. Being that there is an accident every 3 seconds and add to that the fact that 99% of vehicles on the road today are financed for close to the full amount of the retail price that just goes to show how important GAP coverage is. Now what car dealers won’t tell you is the reality behind GAP insurance. The reality is that car insurance companies will only cover the wholesale price of your vehicle. Car dealers want to sell you your car for as much money as possible – they are very greedy. So they will never sell you the car at close to wholesale value. The difference here is thousands of dollars and that’s why you need Insurance. You are basically covering the amount that you owe that was pure profit [...]

Been thinking about getting a new car or truck? Thinking of trading in your vehicle on a new one? If you’re going to have a trade-in then you absolutely need to read the rest this article so that you know how to maximize the value of your trade-in! Too many people today don’t take the time to do what I’m about to tell you to get the most money for their trade-in and then they get far less for their trade in. First let me tell you will but about myself. I worked for many years at Feduke Ford in Vestal New York as a car salesperson. So I know a good bit about trade-in values and what gives some customers a higher value and others much lower values. If you’re like me you weren’t born rich and don’t have money to throw around. So you need to maximize the money that you’re going to get for your trade-in. First things first. The most obvious thing you need to do is clean out your car. You wouldn’t believe how many trade-ins I’ve seen that are filthy pig styes. This should be obvious to you. If your car looks like crap [...]

Have you ever been to a car dealership and seeing a little blue and white sticker next to the MSRP sticker? This is what is called an addendum sticker and you will notice that the price on the MSRP becomes higher on this blue sticker. With an addendum sticker the car dealer can alter the price of the vehicle and make it much higher by either adding optional equipment or in some cases just raising the price for the hell of it. Literally I’ve seen car dealers and their sales managers that degree and with hot selling cars like the Honda S2000 when it first came out or the Honda Odyssey van when it was so hot you had to be on a 6 month long waiting list. They love the stick on these little addendum stickers and take the MSRP and crank it up. Sometimes they add optional equipment like spoilers or paint protection programs, expensive car wax treatments, etc… All of these items are heavily marked up. The actual price of that spoiler painted and installed is around $250. But of course on the addendum sticker they will add $1000 or so to the price. The actual price [...]

If you’re like me you want to save money, gain performance from your vehicle and get better gas mileage whenever possible. So when I heard that K&N made these air filters that were reusable and basically lasted forever, I became very interested in them. Then when I read up on them I found that they also give better airflow to the engine which causes a slight increase in horsepower and a slight gain in fuel economy. So I was sold and bought a K&N air filter. The next time I took my car to the mechanic to have an oil change done (yes I go to the car dealership because Jiffy Lube and the other quick oil change places rip you off by not emptying your oil half the time) I had him install the new K&N air filter. The mechanic told me these K&N air filters are great and that he used them himself. Restore cloudy, yellow headlight lenses to new and save big money over replacements with the best in headlight restoration and cleaning kits at MDWholesale.com! I bought mine for $40 off of eBay and this included shipping and handling. At my local Advanced Automotive and PepBoy’s the [...]

I’m not new to car sales and car dealerships and the sometimes shady tactics they employ to extract as much profit as they can from each customer. It’s kind of like they take each and every customer and try and drain as much money from them as possible. Car dealers and their employees don’t care whether you’re a long-term and repeat customer or someone they just walked in the door for the first time – make no mistake, they are out to extract every penny possible from each and every single customer. Well, being that I have years of experience in working with car dealerships all sorts of different levels from a salesperson on up to the general manager I am usually borrowed by friends and family to go with him when they buy a car to help get them a better price on that new car. It amazes me how even when they are made aware of the fact that I was a general manager of a large volume car dealership for years that they still try and pull the wool over me. It’s just unbelievable from lying about interest rates – yes, sadly every single car dealership out [...]

Don’t you hate it when you get rate apply your driveway and put your car in drive and the check engine light or some other similar warning light comes on your dashboard? Does it mean your engine is about to blow up and that you have to have your car towed immediately to the nearest car dealer service area? What exactly does the check engine or dashboard warning light mean and what should you do? Well first of all, the check engine or dashboard warning light could mean almost anything. On newer cars a check engine light will light up whenever your car’s computer thinks it needs to have an oil change done. So that right there is not bad and is just a friendly reminder to get your oil changed. Also, if you leave your gas cap off or if it’s not turned all the way like it’s supposed to be (3 clicks) then your check engine light will come on and not only that but you won’t pass inspection without a gas cap on or properly tightened in many cars. This is one of the number one things that mechanics spot is that a gas cap is not [...]

Are you in the market for a new car or truck? Are you thinking of replacing one of your vehicles with either a new or used vehicle? Well there are some things that you need to know if you want to save some money and not make the dealer rich. There is a reason why car dealers are all millionaires – they know how to get as much profit and as much money out of your pocket as possible. Car dealers don’t just sell you a vehicle – that was the way it was back in the 60s and 70s. Nowadays they sell you the vehicle, the financing to go with the vehicle (which most of the time makes them more money than selling the vehicle in the first place), extended warranties (which they always double the price on), and numerous other gizmos and things you’ve never heard of before to help supposedly protect your car that you’ve purchased. Are any of these things were what you would pay for it the dealer had his way and you paid top dollar – absolutely not. Some of the things dealers have sold in the past and that still continue to sell today are actually borderline [...]

The recession has hit most of us quite hard. If you are like most Americans you probably drive a newer car and have a loan on it that requires higher levels of insurance and collision coverage. Now the funny thing is when you buy a newer car or brand-new car at the car dealer they somehow tend to forget to tell you that your payments on the car aren’t the actual total of you’re monthly payments. You also have to pay for your car insurance which obviously is to be much higher on a newer car than a older, used car. Sometimes, actually most of the time, by buying a new car your car insurance can actually double or even quadruple. This is why books like the automatic millionaire and other common sense how to get out of debt books tell you that you should drive an older vehicle. The reason here is simple because the older vehicle, especially if it’s paid for, requires less insurance coverage or you can even drop the collision if it’s completely paid for. Now you might say why on earth would you drop collision coverage and what if someone hits me. Who is going to pay to fix [...]

Most of us have gone online to look at and compare prices for everything from life insurance and credit cards to auto insurance. But the problem that we run into a lot of times with auto insurance is that they want our contact information including our e-mail and home phone number so they can contact us and give us a personal quote. Most of us don’t want to be contacted by each and every single auto insurer. So how do we get around this and is getting around this a good idea? Well recently in the last year or so a lot of auto insurers have found that there’s been a lot of people that quickly leave their websites in search of one where they don’t have to enter personal information to obtain an auto insurance quote. This may not only cost them customers in the short run but it could also cost him lots of potential customers in the long run as Google and the other search engines determine your search engine placement for various search terms based on stickiness of your website. So if a lot of people quickly leave your website because you’re trying to get personal information from that connection hurt [...]
